FN America’s line of micro-compact 9mm Reflex pistols has been a highly popular choice for concealed carry since the original FN Reflex was released in 2023. The company first improved on the original design with the FN Reflex RD, and now, in 2025, they’ve announced the FN Reflex XL MRD.
Designed with a larger frame and increased capacity without adding bulk, this handgun was made to be the “perfect blend of shootability and concealability.” Unlike most guns of its class, the FN Reflex XL MRD has an internal hammer system and features improved ergonomics, an easy-to-rack optics-ready slide, interchangeable backstraps, and a cold hammer forged barrel.
If you’re looking for a 9mm concealed carry pistol with all the trimmings, this is a great one to add to your list. In this article, we’ll cover all details about this firearm to help you determine whether it’s right for you.

Size & Capacity
The FN Reflex XL packs a surprisingly large capacity into a slim, micro-compact frame. Weighing only 20 ounces and measuring 5.2 inches tall, 1.08 inches wide, and 6.75 inches long with a barrel length of 3.8 inches, this pistol comes standard with one 15-round flush-fit magazine and one extended 18-round magazine. The Reflex XL is also available in a state-compliant 10-round variation.
Frame & Grip
The micro-compact frame of the FN Reflex XL MRD is available in black or FDE with black controls. It features a reversible magazine release, an internal hammer, and a Slimline accessory rail. The Reflex XL’s rail is patterned after the Glock 43X MOS rail, making it compatible with SureFire XSC and Streamlight TLR-7® sub flashlights.
This model also has a few ergonomic upgrades to the grip, including a new palm swell, an enhanced trigger guard undercut, and an extended beavertail as well as interchangeable backstraps.
In a Vedder Holsters review of the FN Reflex XL, YouTuber Scott Wilson of Drop It Like It's Scott said the Reflex XL features FN’s typical high-quality grip stippling and has a great feel.
“I like the smallness of the grip. I’ve got rather large hands, so normally when I grab a pistol I like the pistol to be a little bit bigger. But with this one, the grip allows me to wrap around and get a full-on grip of the actual gun,” he said. “It’s a little snappy. When it’s pushing back, the beavertail is digging into my hand a little bit, but that comes with the territory with all pistols. I can’t really think of anything negative about it.”
Trigger
The Reflex XL MRD’s internal hammer design gives it a crisp, light trigger, contributing to its overall accuracy. The single-action-only trigger also features a safety and a pull weight of 5 pounds.
Slide & Barrel
The FN Reflex XL is crafted with a 3.8-inch cold hammer-forged stainless steel barrel that features a recessed target crown for improved accuracy and durability. Its slide is optics-ready and has front and rear serrations. It is designed with a low racking force and is very easy to maneuver, making it a great option for those with limited grip strength or anyone who just wants an easy-to-rack slide. This pistol also has a polished ramp and chamber to reduce jams and support a reliable feed.
Sights & Optics
Built with an optics-ready slide, the FN Reflex XL is compatible with any micro red dot with the same footprint as the Shield RMSc or Holosun 507K. As far as its built-in sights go, the Reflex XL has a high-visibility tritium front night sight with an orange-painted ring and a squared, blacked-out U-notch rear sight.
“One of the cool things with this particular pistol is that when you put on a red dot or a green dot, you do not lose your rear sight, so you will have that co-witness. That is very important for a lot of shooters to be able to have that co-witnessing ability,” Wilson said.
Safety
This FN model is available both with or without a manual safety, depending on your preference. Either way, the pistol is equipped with multiple internal passive safeties, including a fire control safety, a firing pin block, and a trigger safety.
